(Thanks, Oprah!) It airs on September 13th, 2010.

Personally, I think we should make today (June 14 – Nate Berkus Day) a national holiday. Actually… how about a “North American” holiday? A chance for both nations to sit back, enjoy a day off and celebrate Nate and his genius….and of course, our mutual love of interior design.

No noticeable bumps or bites; just dry. Dryer than the Sahara in the summer. And so itchy. Itchy to the point that I itched my skin so much I occasionally drew blood.  I worried I had been bitten by something (but for four months?). Yikes. Then I feared the worst. Bed bugs. Even my doctor confirmed it was bed bugs and prescribed me a ridiculously overpriced lotion to calm it down. I called in the troops (aka exterminator) and in about 2.3 seconds he confirmed it was NOT bedbugs. LORD. Relief and frustration all at once.

The only thing I had changed in my routine was using a new body lotion given to me as a birthday gift from my wonderful friend. L’Occitane Ultra Rich Body Creme. For someone with dry skin, I was excited by this new find and frankly the very generous gift! This puppy was $50 for the jar so I knew it had to be good. Or was it? The thought did cross my mind that perhaps it was this creme that was making me have such a violent reaction, but then I came to my senses. I mean, there’s NO WAY that L’Occitane’s $50 creme could be doing this to me, right? Silly me.

Long story short, it was the L’Occitane product causing me months of agony and did a little investigating. You see, I happened to have Paula Begoun’s book (Don’t Go To The Cosmetics Counter Without Me) on hand that has a dictionary of beauty product ingredients in it. In the myriad of ingredients on the jar, there were NINE ingredients that are potential irritants and the combination of them apparently wasn’t agreeing with me. (I went back to tell the doctor she was wrong, btw, about the bedbugs).

I called L’Occitane this morning to let them know the situation and was promised a reply by the end of the day. Here’s what they had to say for themselves:

Dear Ms. Russell,

I hope this message finds you well.

This is in regards to your telephone call earlier regarding the Ultra Rich Body Cream.

I have contacted the claims department and they have checked the batch number you have provided (01CP200K7 – 3581147900). They assured us that this product is in good condition.

In cases like this, we normally ask our clients to inform us immediately after they have an allergic reaction from using one of our products. They then go to the store and file a claim. Following this procedure, we report the incident to our laboratory in France to address the customers’ concerns.

As you have said, you bought or received the Ultra Rich Body Cream in October 2009 (more than 6 months ago).

We do apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you but we cannot really do anything at this point.
